This standing figure was carved by an Ewe artist, and lives at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. The natural wood is painted in earthy tones, with an almost chalky finish. I love how the artist has worked with the materials at hand. The surface isn’t smooth but roughly hewn, giving the piece an authentic, handmade feel. The paint is thinly applied, allowing the wood grain to peek through, adding depth and texture. There’s a beautiful tension between the raw material and the artist’s touch. Look at the head, with its almost mask-like expression. The eyes are simple slits, yet they convey a sense of introspection. The mouth, just a subtle line, hints at a quiet strength. It reminds me of the work of artists like Brancusi, who could capture the essence of a form with such economy of means. Art is really just one big conversation, after all, where ideas are passed from one to another and made new all over again.
