Richard Diebenkorn made this drawing of a nude, reclining on her right side, with graphite on paper. I love the quietness of the drawing, and how it captures a moment of repose. You can see the artist thinking through the form, a repeated line here and there, searching for the right contour, the right way to describe the weight of the body, and how it rests on the surface. It reminds me of other drawings by Matisse, where the simple act of drawing becomes a way of seeing and feeling. It's almost like Diebenkorn is in conversation with the history of art, but also with his own process, his own way of working through ideas, and his focus on how the body occupies space. It’s a lovely reminder that art-making can be an intimate and thoughtful process.
