Francisc Sirato made this painting, Square in Balcic, with soft hues and gentle brushstrokes, like he’s trying to catch a memory. I can imagine him standing there, brush in hand, squinting at the scene before him. The way he layers the paint, thin and washy, gives it a dreamy quality, as if the whole town is shimmering in the heat. Look at how the buildings blur into each other, how the sea merges with the sky. It's like he's not just painting what he sees, but what he feels. That little dash of pink on the building to the bottom-left, for instance, feels so deliberate, so personal. It’s those touches that make you wonder what he was thinking, what he was trying to capture. It reminds me of other painters, like Bonnard, who used color to evoke mood and atmosphere. Painters are always in conversation with each other, riffing on the same themes, but always with their own unique voice. And like all good paintings, this one leaves you with more questions than answers, which, for me, is the whole point.
