This is Bela Czobel's "Head," a drawing whose date remains a mystery, but it offers insight into the artist’s exploration of form and emotion. Czobel, born in 1883, lived through profound social and political upheaval across Europe, and like many artists of his generation, his work reflects the anxieties and uncertainties of a rapidly changing world. Here, the subject's gently tilted head and closed eyes suggest a moment of introspection or perhaps resignation. It is difficult to discern much about the person, their gender, or class, and the subject seems to retreat into themself. The lines surrounding the figure are dark and roughly drawn as if to entrap the subject in their own mind. Czobel lived through two world wars and multiple social and political movements, and in this portrait, we can see the face of someone retreating from the world. It is a moving piece that shows the emotional toll taken on many by the events of the 20th century.
