Josef Capek gave us V červnu in 1936 with what looks like humble oils on maybe board or canvas. I like imagining him outside, trying to capture a summer landscape. You see the church on the hill, the figures in the foreground, the way the light hits the fields, and, as a painter, you can't help but wonder about the struggle. I see the green lines on the hill and those marks look purposeful, but I wonder what it felt like to make them. The paint is applied with a kind of freedom that many painters aim for, where a brushstroke can just exist as itself, capturing a feeling, not just a description of reality. You have to try and capture the feeling of the place, not just the look. Those blues and yellows in the sky talk to each other so well, maybe Capek was listening.
