M.C. Escher’s 'Birds in Space' presents a tessellated exploration of form and infinity. Escher, living through both World Wars, often turned to mathematical precision to express a world that made little sense, engulfed as it was by political conflict and ideological divides. Here, Escher uses birds, symbols of freedom and aspiration, to demonstrate transformation and continuity. The interlocking figures merge and emerge, challenging conventional notions of figure and ground. The darker birds, set against the lighter ones, could be seen as a subtle nod to the balance – or imbalance – of power and social dynamics. Despite its almost scientific precision, there's something deeply emotional about Escher's work. He once said he was always trying to express 'the harmony that is in us'. This piece invites us to reflect on the interconnectedness of existence and the human desire to find order in a complex world. In 'Birds in Space,' Escher captures both the mathematical beauty and the intangible yearning of the human spirit.
