Pablo Picasso created this painting, Interior with easel, using oil on canvas. Look at the muted greys and blacks punctuated by creams and pale blues. I get a real sense of how painting is a dialogue between the eye and the hand. Like the painting has come into being through a slow process of refinement. You can see a ghost of the earlier marks underneath. I always sympathise with other painters. I wonder what Picasso was thinking when he was working on this one. Maybe about Cezanne, or Braque. The history of painting weighs on you, but it also urges you on. The palette, the easel, the still life, are all so familiar! It’s like he’s saying, ‘How can I make this my own?’ I feel that. We’re all looking for our own way of seeing. That painterly conversation goes on and on, across time, inspiring all of us to create. It embraces uncertainty. There are so many different ways of seeing the world.
