This "Adoration of the Magi" is an engraving of unknown origin, now residing at the Met. Here we see the traditional biblical scene, yet through whose eyes, and for whom, is this story being told? The magi, often interpreted to represent different continents or races, approach the Christ child bearing gifts. Notice the varied reactions, from reverence to curiosity, the contrast in their postures speak volumes. The European gaze, steeped in colonialism, often exoticized and Othered non-European figures. The black magus is rendered as a racial type. How do these depictions reinforce or challenge existing power structures? The intimate moment between mother and child becomes a stage for complex negotiations of identity, power, and faith. It encourages us to reflect on whose stories are told, and how they are told.
