This is an engraving called "The Execution of Haman," created by an anonymous artist. Here, the composition draws us into the contorted body of Haman. The image shows a figure hoisting a large block of stone, presumably to crush him. The stark contrast between light and shadow not only defines the musculature but also heightens the emotional impact, underscoring the cruelty of the execution. We can see elements of Mannerism in the exaggerated physique, which serves to enhance the drama of the scene. The image prompts questions about power, justice, and the spectacle of violence. Haman's figure is rendered in a way that invites interpretation of cultural values related to punishment and moral retribution. The print serves as a semiotic text, encoding and communicating complex ideas about justice, power, and cultural values.
Comments
This print features a detail from Michelangelo’s fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Represented is Haman, the condemned persecutor of the Jews, from the Book of Esther. Prints of Michelangelo’s paintings were popular among tourists visiting Rome, and were available also in other Italian cities, including Venice.
