Leo Gestel made this drawing, Kop van een man schuin naar rechtsboven kijkend, with pen and ink. It's all about these bold, confident strokes, and how they come together to create depth and shadow. You know, when you're drawing, sometimes the best thing you can do is just let the ink flow and see what happens. Look at the way Gestel uses these thick lines to define the man's features, especially around the eyes and brow. It's not about perfect representation, it's about capturing a feeling, an essence. The texture created by the ink is so tactile, you can almost feel the weight of it on the page. It's like Gestel is wrestling with the medium, pushing it to its limits. It puts me in mind of some of the drawings of George Grosz. But, while Gestel emphasizes the abstract nature of the drawing, we can still see the figure. What do you see? There's no right or wrong answer.
