This medal, commemorating the centenary of the Dutch East India Company in 1702, was crafted by Reynier Arondeaux. The circular form, cool silver tone, and low relief invite a close, tactile inspection, its compact scale belying the vastness of the depicted enterprise. The medal’s two sides present contrasting yet complementary scenes. On one side, a regal female figure sits enthroned, symbolizing power and stability. Her posture and attire suggest authority, while the surrounding floral motifs hint at prosperity and abundance. Flipping the medal reveals a dynamic maritime scene, with ships sailing between classical columns. The visual rhythm established by the oars and waves creates movement, evoking the VOC’s extensive naval operations. The medal operates as a symbolic structure, juxtaposing static authority with dynamic activity. It not only commemorates the VOC’s 100-year anniversary but also encapsulates the dual aspects of its existence: the authority and wealth on land, enabled and sustained by its maritime reach.
