Gunther Forg made this untitled painting in 2008 with fluid brush marks, dancing colors and an openness which invites all kind of possibilities. Forg's artmaking feels like a process of constant experimentation, a kind of ongoing conversation with the canvas. I find the interplay of color and texture so interesting. The paint isn't applied thickly but in translucent layers, which creates a depth that draws you in. Look at the lower left of the painting, where a stroke of deep purple meets a lighter red, see how these gestures feel both controlled and spontaneous? Forg leaves the traces of his working process visible, allowing us to witness each brushstroke, each decision. Forg here reminds me of the work of Joan Mitchell, someone else unafraid of bold color and gestural mark-making. Ultimately Forg's painting celebrates the inherent ambiguity of art, suggesting the beauty of something that can be endlessly interpreted.
