Isaac Weissenbruch created this contour of a goat using graphite and possibly black ink. In ancient Greece, the goat was closely associated with Dionysus, the god of wine, fertility, and theatre. The goat embodies virility, strength and untamed nature. Yet, turn your mind back further through the ages, and you'll find the same animal rendered in cave paintings, depicting a more fundamental relationship, one of sustenance and survival. Look at the horns, now reduced to a suggestive curve. Think of the times the goat-horned figure appears across cultures, from Pan to devils, each form carrying echoes of the past. These transformations highlight a continuous dialogue between humanity and the natural world, showing how we continually reshape and redefine our symbols. The drawing is a window into the deep well of cultural memory.
