Poppenkast op de Dam, voor de Nieuwe Kerk

Curatorial notes
Martin Monnickendam made this watercolour called 'Poppenkast op de Dam, voor de Nieuwe Kerk'. The immediate visual impression is one of dynamic arrangement, as a crowd surrounds the puppet show set against the imposing architecture of the Nieuwe Kerk. Monnickendam uses a limited palette of blues, greys, and blacks, punctuated by the puppet show's brighter yellow and pink, drawing our eye to the performance itself. The artist sketches the crowd with minimal detail. The figures, rendered as clusters of colour and quick strokes, suggests a unified mass. In contrast, the solid black silhouette of a figure in the foreground creates a barrier, disrupting the viewer's direct access to the scene. Monnickendam uses the urban environment of Dam Square to examine the play between public and private, performance and observation, and participation and exclusion. Through its composition and tonal range, the artist destabilizes the traditional relationship between subject and viewer, inviting us to question our position within the social landscape.
