This is a porcelain figure of a reclining girl by the Höchst Porzellan Manufaktur. Höchst was one of the first porcelain manufacturers in Germany. Founded in 1746, it soon became known for decorative figurines such as this one. These objects became luxury commodities during the 18th century, which was avidly collected by aristocratic elites. Notice the girl's coy pose, with her finger pointed upwards. The artist has captured a sense of whimsical innocence. The bright colours and smooth surface are typical of the Rococo style which was very popular in Europe at this time. These figurines were usually displayed in the private cabinets of the wealthy and served as conversation pieces in elite social gatherings. Art historians consult a range of documentary sources to understand the meanings and uses of objects such as this, including manufacturer’s records, collectors’ inventories, and period correspondence.
