Caspar David Friedrich, a painter born in what is now Germany, created "Landscape with Rainbow" using oil paints on canvas. The oil paint that Friedrich applied layer upon layer to the canvas is critical to the appearance and meaning of this landscape. The rainbow, for instance, a symbol of hope, appears soft because of how oil paint can be blended. The artist applied the paint with great skill in thin glazes, controlling the texture to create a surface that almost glows. This level of detail evokes an emotive response to the sublime beauty of nature. Oil paint was a relatively well-established medium at the time, yet that doesn't diminish the sheer amount of skill required to achieve such a high degree of realism. Friedrich's work reminds us that craft and fine art have always been deeply intertwined. It’s not just about what you paint, but how you paint it, and the emotion that is conveyed to the viewer.
