Moses ter Borch created this red chalk drawing of a "Standing Young Seaman" sometime in the mid-17th century. Ter Borch himself, who died at only 22, knew something of youthful vulnerability. In the 17th century, the Dutch Republic was a major maritime power, and the lives of seamen were central to its economic and cultural identity. Yet, these lives were often fraught with hardship and danger. This portrait complicates the heroic narrative of Dutch maritime power. The youth’s soft features and modest attire present a gentler, more human vision of maritime life. His stance, while upright, conveys a sense of youthful uncertainty rather than seasoned command. What does it mean to be at sea, away from family, in a profession that extracts a high price? Ter Borch captures a tender, yet strong spirit, quietly facing the world. It is a testament to the quiet courage often found in those who navigate the currents of life, both on land and at sea.
