And the recurring vertical lines, suggestive of bars or perhaps books themselves. A lot of parallel action going on here, a lot of vertical stacks on the floor. The portrait on the easel feels almost secondary in this tableau. Editor: Indeed. Notice also the almost ghostly figure of the artist – obscured, blending into the background as if observing or judging the process of creation rather than actively participating.
