This bronze medal commemorates the inauguration of Willem III as King of the Netherlands in Amsterdam. Minted in 1849, its form is simple, yet its material and methods of production speak volumes about the society that created it. Bronze, an alloy of copper and tin, was chosen for its durability and capacity to capture intricate detail through the striking process. The medal was die-struck, where a blank of metal is placed between two dies and then hammered or pressed, leaving a relief of the design on the metal. Notice the sharp lines and precise lettering, made possible by skilled die engravers. The medal served as a tool for mass communication and dissemination of political power. By owning this medal, one could tangibly connect with the monarch and feel part of the Dutch nation, even if from a distance. Looking closely at this small object, we can appreciate that materials, making, and context are crucial to understanding the full meaning of an artwork.
