Mariam Aslamazian painted “The Sisters,” a small oil on canvas, sometime during her prolific career. Aslamazian, an Armenian artist who lived most of her life under Soviet rule, often depicted women from various ethnic backgrounds, celebrating the diversity within the Soviet Union. In this intimate portrait, we see two young women, presumably sisters, rendered with a directness that is both tender and forthright. The sister in the foreground meets the viewer's gaze, her expression holding a mix of curiosity and self-assurance. Her gold earring, a subtle touch of adornment, hints at individuality. The younger sister, slightly behind, looks off to the side, perhaps representing a look towards the future. Aslamazian's choice to portray these young women with such dignity challenges the stereotypical representations of women, and women of color, often seen in art. “The Sisters” invites us to consider the bonds of kinship and the unique identities of women within the larger tapestry of cultural exchange and representation. The artwork serves as a reminder of the importance of recognizing and celebrating the diverse stories that shape our world.
