This is "Venice, Italy 27" by Robert Frank, a series of photographs captured on film. The strips of film here are like sketches in a notebook, each frame a quick impression. It's a really process-oriented way of working. I find myself drawn to the physicality of the medium. The dark blacks and bright whites make the images feel alive. You can almost smell the chemicals used to develop the film. In one strip you can see a group of people bunched together, their faces a blur of excitement. It gives a sense of motion and emotion. The graininess of the film adds to this effect, making the scene feel intimate and spontaneous. Frank’s work reminds me of Garry Winogrand, who also captured fleeting moments of urban life with such intensity. Both artists show us that art isn’t about perfect clarity but about embracing ambiguity and the messiness of the world.
