Antonio Tempesta created this print titled 'Hert,' sometime between 1575 and 1630, using etching and engraving. The composite creature depicted exemplifies a period when the natural world was both observed and fantasized about through a European lens. Consider the term 'Tragelaphum hirco cerno' inscribed at the bottom, reflecting a moment of naming and claiming within the Linnaean system of taxonomy that was emerging at the time. We can see this in other early modern prints and drawings of animals as well. Look closely and you will see this fantastical creature looms over a hunting scene. This juxtaposition invites us to reflect on human dominance over the animal kingdom, framing nature as something to be conquered or controlled. Note the stag is presented as a specimen but also as an animal hunted for sport. What does this image suggest about our role in defining and interacting with the natural world?
