Andre Derain made this large painting "Bathing Women" with oil on canvas. Look at the figures emerging from the lush greenery in warm pinks, oranges, and greens. I love how Derain builds up the forms with these dynamic brushstrokes. I can imagine Derain, stepping back, squinting, and then charging in again, making adjustments, searching for the right balance. It's a physical dance, a conversation between the artist, the canvas, and the subject. The thick texture of the paint gives the figures a sculptural presence, they seem almost carved from the canvas itself. That one bold stroke defining the contour of the figure on the left, it's full of energy, right? You can feel Derain's confidence, his intention, but also a sense of play, like he's improvising, pushing the boundaries of form and color. It's like he's saying, "Let's see what happens if I do this..." Painters are always in conversation with each other across time, riffing off the past, pushing towards something new. And that's the beauty of painting, it's a space of possibility, of open-endedness.
