Curator: This is a landscape drawing by Joshua Cristall, held here at the Tate. Cristall lived from 1765 to 1847. Editor: It feels very preliminary, almost like catching a fleeting thought. The pencil lines are so light, the scene dreamy. Curator: He worked mostly in watercolor, and his circle were quite interested in the picturesque aesthetic, and I think that’s quite evident here. Editor: Absolutely, I love how he suggests the vastness of the landscape with just a few strokes. There’s a real sense of depth despite the simplicity. It's like he's whispering the essence of the place. Curator: It’s fascinating to see these kinds of works in our collection, as they remind us of the value placed on the natural world by artists like Cristall and the artistic circles they inhabited. Editor: It makes you wonder where he was when he captured this, and what else he saw. What was his world like?
