The frères Moreau made this wash drawing called ‘Gezicht op Crèvecoeur’ sometime around 1672. I love how the Moreau brothers handled tone here. The way they’ve created such variation and depth with the grey wash, it's really subtle. I can imagine the brothers standing together on a blustery day making this sketch. There's something about the economy of the marks they make here that feels collaborative. The thinness of the wash creates this wonderful atmosphere, like the scene is fading into the distance, or into memory. And look at the texture they create with these quick strokes! It's like they're trying to capture the feeling of the place, as much as its appearance. I’m struck by their experimentation, and willingness to embrace the unexpected, as they explored new ways of seeing and representing the world around them.
