Richard Gerstl made this painting, Sunny Meadow with Fruit Trees, with oil on canvas. Just look at the swirls of green and gray and black – it’s like Gerstl was wrestling with the trees, trying to capture their essence with every stroke. I imagine him standing there, squinting, the Austrian sun in his eyes, thinking, "How do I make this tree *feel* real?" The paint is thick, alive, almost like the bark itself. You can practically feel the roughness, the weight of it. And those branches, reaching, twisting – they’re like arms trying to grab something just out of reach. It’s a painting that’s all about touch, about the artist’s hand and the way he saw the world. You feel the weight of history and also the excitement of a painter trying to see, you know, like, *really* see. Gerstl was part of a whole community of painters pushing boundaries, like Schoenberg, and you can feel that energy in this painting, like he’s talking to them, arguing with them, painting alongside them, right here on this canvas.
