Editor: This is Arlene Shechet's ceramic sculpture, "Grammar," from an unknown date. The rough texture is juxtaposed against the delicate metal stand. How do you interpret this work? Curator: The title invites us to consider the building blocks of language and form. Considering Shechet's feminist perspective, the stacked, almost awkward forms could be a commentary on rigid societal structures, particularly those imposed on women. What do you think about the use of such raw, almost brutal, textures in contrast to the colorful base? Editor: I hadn't considered the feminist aspect. The roughness now feels like a deliberate disruption. Thanks for the insight!
