Curatorial notes
This etching, made by Pieter van Call the Younger around 1710, presents a complex interplay of visual elements centered around an allegorical scene. The composition is dominated by two female figures framing a central medallion, creating a symmetrical structure that invites a balanced interpretation of its themes. The figures, rendered in meticulous detail, hold our gaze. One presents a lamp and the other a mirror which flanks a wreath-enclosed depiction of the adoration by the shepherds. Above, there's a landscape scene, with a small tableau of the holy family set within a framed architectural structure, thus creating a play within a play. Call's use of contrasting tones and fine lines emphasizes the texture and materiality of the print. The overall effect isn't merely aesthetic, but it is a comment on the role of representation and interpretation in religious art. The architectural setting destabilizes conventional boundaries, inviting us to contemplate the layers of meaning embedded within the artwork.
