Curatorial notes
Etienne de Lavallée-Poussin created this artwork using pen in brown ink with brush in brown wash. Created in the late 18th century, this artwork gives us insight into the visual culture and religious practices of the time. The artist was working during a period marked by significant social and political upheaval, including growing secularism and challenges to religious authority, particularly in France, where he was from. The drawing depicts a vessel which would have been used during Roman Catholic mass. The careful rendering of these objects suggests a reverence for the rituals and traditions they represent. It also might reflect a more personal connection to faith, or perhaps a commission by the church itself. Consider how the artist employs line and shading to give depth to the object. This piece reflects a society grappling with questions of faith, power, and tradition. The image serves as a reminder of how art can both reflect and shape our understanding of these complex issues.
