This is a design for a candelabra made with pen and black ink. The drawing presents a symmetrical, five-branched candlestick, decorated with grape vines. Objects of elaborate design like this tell us much about the culture and society in which they were imagined. Although we don't know where or when this design was produced, the combination of classical and naturalistic motifs suggests a European origin. Vine leaves and grapes evoke both the classical god Bacchus and the Eucharist. This candelabra, if ever realized, would have spoken of status and wealth, displayed perhaps in a private residence or church. The design itself reflects the institutions that train artists and the systems of patronage that enable them. Historians piece together the stories of such artworks through archival research, studying the economic conditions that allowed for the production of luxury goods. These objects provide valuable insights into the social structures of the past.
