Nieuwe post of reizigers-spel

Editor: Here we have "Nieuwe post of reizigers-spel," a game board etched by Willem Carl Wansleven sometime between 1806 and 1858. It's full of numbered vignettes, almost like a visual journey. There's a wonderfully quaint, almost whimsical feel about the whole thing. What's your take on this? Curator: Whimsical is the word, isn't it? Imagine, for a moment, that stagecoach lumbering across a landscape, not so different from our own commutes these days, really! But, notice how Wansleven gives us these little windows - little dramas unfolding, almost, at each numbered spot. What do you suppose those short phrases under the game, barely decipherable, might hold? Editor: It looks like rules... "Explanation of the New Amusing Stagecoach Game," the title says. I wonder what was so amusing! Curator: Amusing then might not mean the same now! Remember, travel was different... slower, more reliant on chance encounters, unexpected delays. This game, I fancy, tried to capture some of that unpredictable thrill and perhaps poke a bit of fun at the traveler’s experience! What does number 3 remind you of? It seems so isolated. Editor: It's almost a landscape. Fields... or perhaps signaling danger? Curator: Indeed! The etching captures so much detail with very minimal means. I hadn’t thought of the signaling aspect though…that is fascinating. Editor: It makes you wonder how many people gathered around this board, sharing stories of their own journeys. Curator: Exactly. Art doesn't always need to hang on a wall. Sometimes, it just needs a place in our lives and stories. I'll think about it when traveling next time!
