I sometimes wonder, are they binding him or elevating him? Are they like strings of fate, tangled around existence? Editor: I hadn’t thought about them elevating the figure! I mostly just felt the claustrophobia. But those metallic additions give it a different texture and makes me think of body modification and perhaps…alienation. Curator: Alienation, yes! A perfect word. Beksinski, you see, had a deep preoccupation with inner landscapes. This wasn’t about illustrating external horror; it was about giving form to internal states of anxiety and transcendence. Perhaps even a prophecy. What feelings arise in you as you think of it that way? Editor: I can understand how it represents anxiety; now I see a deeper struggle within the figures instead of it simply being something spooky.
