Curatorial notes

Jan Veth created the "Landschap Buitenzorg" using graphite and colored pencil. The landscape unfolds with a subdued palette, structured by horizontal lines, an underlay grid which suggests a method of measured observation and perhaps a desire to impose order onto the natural world. The drawing is split into three horizontal sections. These layers create depth, yet simultaneously flatten the perspective. The eye is drawn across the surface rather than deep into the landscape. The use of color is restrained, with blues and greens delineating the foliage and land. The linear quality of the pencil marks adds a textural element, yet this is contained within a controlled framework. This tension between organic subject matter and structural composition invites a reflection on the relationship between nature and artistic representation. Veth does not offer a romantic vision but an analytical study of form and space. This is landscape not as a vista to lose oneself in but as an exercise in seeing.
