This photographic print of Charles Philip Krauth was made by William H. Tipton. The photographic print itself is set into a book as part of a bound page. The albumen print process resulted in a sepia tone image with great detail, using light-sensitive chemicals to capture this portrait on paper. The final print was then carefully mounted onto a heavier card stock, adding to its physical presence and durability. The book and photograph bear witness to their own mode of production, tied to wider social issues of labor, politics, and consumption. Photography in the 19th century involved considerable work, from preparing the chemicals, taking the photograph, developing, and printing. By considering the materials, making, and context, we gain a deeper appreciation for the artistry and historical significance of such images, breaking down traditional barriers between fine art and craft.
