Adriaen van Ostade created this small etching of a man talking to a woman winding yarn sometime in the 17th century. Van Ostade lived during the Dutch Golden Age, a time of great economic prosperity and artistic production in the Netherlands. His genre scenes often depict everyday life, particularly the lives of peasants and working-class people. In this period we begin to see the rise of the nuclear family, and a greater division of labour along gender lines. Here the man is standing, equipped for travel, while the women sits winding yarn; her domain is clearly the home. Note the way the image is framed, like looking through a doorway, emphasizing an inside/outside, male/female binary. By focusing on these common folk, Van Ostade invites us to consider the daily rhythms and social structures that shape their existence, and perhaps to reflect on our own.
