Alfred Henry Forrester, active in the mid-19th century, designed this book cover proof for ‘Reminiscences of an Old Physician’. Reflecting the Victorian era's fascination with childhood innocence and sentimentality, the artwork features cherubic figures atop a stone plinth, evoking a sense of classical virtue. The prominent display of medical tools at the base suggests a celebration of scientific advancement. Yet, seen through a contemporary lens, the imagery prompts questions about the medical profession's role in shaping societal norms, and whose stories get told. The "old physician" of the title hints at experiences and perspectives that were likely shaped by the social hierarchies of the time, particularly concerning gender, race, and class. This cover invites us to reflect on how medical narratives can both mirror and mold our understanding of identity and health.
