Ubaldo Gandolfi made this drawing, The Apotheosis of San Vitale, in pen and brown ink, with brown wash over graphite. The artist coaxed the rather modest materials to create a grand scene. Gandolfi was deeply invested in drawing as a fundamental skill, essential to the entire artistic process. Here, he used pen and ink to achieve dramatic tonal effects. With his skills, the artist was able to conjure an image of divine ascension. By layering lines and washes, the artist was able to create a sense of depth and movement, lifting Saint Vitale heavenward. Note the contrast between the crisp lines defining the figures and the soft washes suggesting clouds. The artwork is a testament to Gandolfi’s mastery of traditional techniques, elevating humble materials to achieve sublime artistic expression. In his work, we can reconsider what we mean by the terms ‘fine art’ and ‘craft.’
