Curatorial notes
Kinder Album, born in 1982, painted ‘Ukrainians are Sitting in the Bomb Shelters’ in 2022, using watercolor. The choice of watercolor is significant. It’s a humble medium, often associated with childhood art or preliminary sketches. Yet here, it powerfully conveys the vulnerability of a community under siege. The artist captures the anxiety and the uncertainty of war. The quick, fluid application of the watercolor mirrors the immediacy of the crisis. The colors – fiery oranges and reds contrasting with somber grays – evoke the chaos and destruction of conflict. Note how the rough texture of the paper shines through, adding a raw, unfiltered quality to the scene. The simplicity of the medium underscores the direct emotional impact of the image. Through the combination of materials and making, Album transforms a traditional medium into a poignant commentary on contemporary events, challenging any hierarchy between art and craft.
