Giuseppe de' Levi, made this crucifix with a Golgotha base in the 16th or 17th century from bronze, with gilding on the figure of Christ. The visual impact relies on the contrast between the dark patinated bronze of the cross and the base, and the radiant gilt figure. Bronze casting is an exacting process. The artist first created a model, likely in wax, capturing the anatomical detail. This was then encased in a mold, the wax melted out, and molten bronze poured in. Once cooled, the mold was broken, and the surface finished. The Golgotha base, decorated with skulls, speaks to the tradition of memento mori. The gilding process would have involved applying thin leaves of gold to the bronze surface, requiring skill and patience. This crucifix wasn't just an object of devotion; it was also a display of technical virtuosity, and access to precious materials. The value lies not just in its religious symbolism, but in the intense labor and skillful making involved.
