Lala Eve Rivol made this "Petroglyph" sometime in the 20th century. It’s got this soft, velvety texture and a cool, almost monochromatic palette. The process feels immediate, intuitive. I imagine Rivol working spontaneously, embracing the accidents and imperfections that arise. The animals and figures depicted are rendered with a delicate touch and an eye for detail. I see the shapes echoing the petroglyphs of ancient cultures, a dance between tradition and individuality. What was Rivol thinking when she made this? Maybe she was considering the role of women in art, questioning the conventions of her time. This piece feels deeply personal. I imagine Rivol in conversation with other artists, exchanging ideas and pushing the boundaries of what painting can be. It makes me feel like embracing ambiguity, celebrating the messy, the imperfect, and the uncertain.
