This is a vintage portrait by T Jingu of an unknown Japanese couple, likely made using traditional photographic techniques of the time. The tones are warm and sepia, giving it an old-timey feel. I’m wondering about the act of posing. Both figures are very still, and their formal attire suggests they might have been holding those poses for quite some time. I find myself thinking about the tradition of portraiture here. The way the photograph captures the couple’s likeness while telling us something about their place in society. The surface of the photograph has a subtle texture, perhaps from the paper it’s printed on, which softens the image slightly. I’m thinking of other portraitists like Nadar and Julia Margaret Cameron, who were also interested in capturing something essential about their sitters. Ultimately, this portrait becomes a meditation on time, memory, and the enduring power of images.
