Follis of Nicephorus III, Constantinople
Listen to curator's interpretation
Curatorial notes
Curator: Here we have a Follis of Nicephorus III, from Constantinople. Its creation is attributed to Nikephoros III. Editor: Immediately, I'm struck by the texture, that aged patina. I mean, it feels ancient, whispering stories of empires. Curator: Indeed. The symbolic weight this small coin carried is immense. It represents imperial authority and the Byzantine economy, culture, and belief system. Editor: To imagine this tiny thing, this 4.61 gram piece of metal, passing through so many hands! It connects us to a whole vanished world. Curator: The inscriptions and images are quite stylized, serving a very specific purpose: to communicate power and legitimacy to a diverse population. Editor: It’s really humbling, the thought that something so small could hold so much history, so much…life. Curator: Absolutely, reflecting on the coin’s journey, it gives a deeper appreciation for cultural memory. Editor: For me, it’s a reminder of just how connected we all are to the past, however tarnished the metal may be.
