Oleg Holosiy made this painting of a yellow room, probably on canvas, with oil paint, but who knows when. The way the paint is put down, it’s all about speed. The artist wasn’t trying to make the paint behave, but letting it do its thing, almost like a dance. Looking at the surface, the colors are laid on pretty thick in places, and you can see all the brushstrokes. You can see where the paint is really wet and juicy. In the way the green and brown squares tilt up towards us, there is a dialogue between surface and depth. It's a place where the physical stuff of paint meets the illusion of space. The dark figure on the left, is that a shadow or a person? Holosiy reminds me of Albert Oehlen, someone else who isn't afraid to make a mess and see what happens. Art is a conversation, and it's up to us to keep it going.
