Oleg Holosiy made this with paint, probably oil or acrylic, I am guessing, and you can see those strokes, marks, and gestures of putting the paint on. It’s a painting of a room, a green and red checked floor, a black pitcher or vase on the left, and the outdoors beyond. Looking at it, I imagine Holosiy in front of the canvas, maybe a little agitated, making quick, decisive marks, layering color upon color until the scene takes shape. I like how the yellow light seems to vibrate, creating a sense of energy and movement. And the brown is so earthy, and anchors the room, bringing a groundedness to the scene. It makes me think of other painters, Bonnard comes to mind, who were interested in capturing fleeting moments of light and color, and of course, the avant-garde of the time. Holosiy, like all artists, was in conversation with what came before, pushing it forward with his own perspective. He’s riffing on painting, seeing what it can do!
