Curator: At the Tate, we have Kim Lim's "Bridge I," a lithograph where simple forms carry complex weight. What's your initial take? Editor: It feels…stark. Like a series of dark monoliths frozen mid-topple. Are these shapes trying to connect or break apart? Curator: Bridges, of course, are about connection. Lim’s choice of angular shapes, the heavy ink—it speaks to the burdens, the tensions inherent in forging links between disparate entities. Editor: It's true. The forms lean into each other yet don't quite touch, leaving this negative space that feels incredibly charged. Like a story left untold, hanging in the balance. Curator: I see in the imagery not just physical bridges, but also psychological ones, those unspoken connections between people, eras, ideas…it is the archetype of the bridge. Editor: Archetypes, burdens, unseen connections, tensions… it's heavier than I first thought. Curator: It invites us to consider what it truly means to connect. Editor: A question well worth pondering as we move on.
