This New Year's wish by Kornél Révész is an etching, a small, intimate greeting from 1934. You can almost feel the artist hunched over the plate, carefully drawing the lines that make up this cherubic figure. I imagine Révész, his breath held, guiding the needle through the metal, each stroke deliberate yet playful. The lines are delicate, creating a sense of depth and texture, especially in the cherub's hair and the folds of the ribbon. Look at how the light catches the figure, how the shadows define its form. The artist scratched into the plate to form the bold declaration: “All the best!” Révész was working in the constructivist style, so this is a slight change in pace for the artist. It would be interesting to see what other festive messages he created. As painters, we're all in conversation, aren't we? Trying new things, building on what's come before, and hopefully, inspiring someone else down the line.
