Jacobus Sörensen made this river view with a bridge using graphite and possibly some ink on paper. The material has influenced every aspect of the work, especially the subtle gradations of light and shade. Graphite, in particular, lends itself to fine detail, as you can see in the distant buildings and the reflections in the water. Sörensen’s choice of materials, and especially the method of drawing rather than painting, gives this landscape a distinctly graphic quality. The drawing is so skilled it’s almost like a photograph, yet it's rendered entirely by hand, a testament to the artist's meticulous labor. This piece demonstrates how an artist can transform humble materials into a captivating image. By focusing on the process and the hand of the artist, we can appreciate the skill and effort involved in creating this seemingly simple landscape.
