This is an undated portrait of Willem II, King of the Netherlands, made anonymously through etching. Royalty and nobility have historically been memorialized through portraits that served as emblems of power, status, and lineage. Here, Willem II’s military attire, medals, and the radiating star behind him, speak to the conventions of regal representation. Yet, what happens when that representation is made anonymously? What might this tell us about the artist’s position or the cultural value of portraiture at the time? The creation of such an artwork would have been influenced by social hierarchies and the cultural significance attached to representing authority. As viewers, we are invited to consider how the depicted image of Willem II upholds or challenges the expected image of leadership. We may reflect on the emotional weight carried by representations of power, and on the narratives they construct about those in positions of authority.
