Joan Brull captured this landscape with oils, layering strokes to conjure the atmospheric stillness of the scene. Imagine Brull standing there, squinting, trying to capture the light as it shifts across the water. You can almost feel the damp air and hear the quiet rustle of leaves. The cool greys and browns create a tranquil, almost melancholic mood. Look at how he's built up the textures, especially in the trees. There's a real sense of depth, like you could step right into the painting. And those reflections in the water? Beautifully done! It reminds me of Corot and some of the Barbizon painters, that interest in capturing the direct experience of nature. Brull is part of an ongoing conversation about how we see and feel the world around us, translating it onto canvas with paint and feeling. It’s a lovely, quiet piece.
