This sculpture by Jose Davila, whose title hints at emotional interactions, is made of metal and paint. What’s interesting here is that the colorful bands of material come together to form a set of lines that occupy the space. The piece is all about relationships, both between the lines themselves, and between the sculpture and the space it inhabits. Look at how each line has a different color or direction, and how this affects its relationship to the other lines. The lines are like thoughts, feelings, or paths, that are both separate and connected. Each color section feels precise but, like, the whole thing is really casual, as if he just threw it down. The metal that Davila uses isn't trying to be something else, but there’s definitely a dance with artists like Sol Lewitt, who wanted to see how far he could take an idea. The great thing is that, instead of a single right answer, art like this is always suggesting different things, which is what makes it exciting.
