Niels Larsen Stevns made these sketches of a dancing woman with pencil on paper. They seem like a burst of energy captured on a grid, a kind of cage for the body, but the dancer doesn't seem to mind. I love to think of Stevns hunched over this small pad, trying to capture the essence of movement. Was he at a performance? Or was this dancer in his head? There are some erasures, shifts of line, as he tries to get the proportions right. It feels so immediate, like a thought in progress. You know when I'm drawing, it's like I'm trying to figure something out. And the line itself becomes a kind of question. These quick strokes remind me of other artists who've been obsessed with the figure in motion, like Degas or Rodin, or even Matisse. Artists are always looking at each other's work, even across time. It is a silent conversation that goes on, inspiring new ways of seeing and feeling. And that's the beauty of art, right? It's not about perfect answers, but about embracing the messy, ambiguous process of trying to understand the world and each other.
